Knives and Pocket knives

Knives

Knives were one of the first tools developed by prehistoric humans and continue to be one of the most useful tools today. They come in many different styles and can be used for any number of uses but they all have basically the same structure. They consist of a blade and a handle and those parts can be further classified depending on the type of knife.

A pocket knife has a folding blade that rests in the handle when the knife is not in use. Many of these types of knives have a selection of different blades and tools, such as a serrated blade, a file and tweezers. The blade can lock into place as they do on the legendary buck knife, or merely snap into place as on the Swiss army knife. A survival knife is often in a folding configuration. A variation of the pocket knife is the switchblade which has a sliding blade that is concealed in the handle.

A hunting knife is a large sheathed knife often called a bowie knife. They are used to dress game and similar versions are used in combat situations. These make excellent camping knives because of their versatility, they can be used for anything from cooking to wood carving. Wood carving knives are highly specialized for the type of cuts intended and often come in a set with many different knives and tools.

Kitchen knives are some of the most widely used knives. A chef knife is a versatile tool that is used for slicing, dicing and preparing many different types of food. The have a long, slightly curved blade that allows the chef to either chop or slice very easily. With good knife sharpeners they can be the sharpest knives available. A knife block provides a safe place to store the various blades used in the kitchen including steak knives. Keeping the blades from contacting each other allows them to stay sharper for longer. Other knives used in the kitchen are the electric knife which is used for carving large pieces of meat and paring knives that are used to remove seeds, stems and other unwanted parts.

Knives have been used in many religious ceremonies throughout time and can be used as symbols to represent many things. In many countries there sale and possession is limited. Butterfly knives and switch blades are often illegal to posses in many areas but smaller knives such as pocket knives are generally accepted.
